This is the member that is carried by the joist hanger. Single, Double, etc. indicate the number of laminations, I.E. a double 2x is 3" wide. Rough = Full width and height of the member, I.E. 4x10 is a true 4" x 10" instead of the nominal 3 1/2" x 9 1/4".
