For those who had the old cylinder players, he continued making 2 minute cylinders, now branded simply as Edison Records. Collectors know them as Standard Records. Thomas Edison made his first sound recordings on sheets of tinfoil at Menlo Park, New Jersey in 1877. At West Orange, New Jersey in 1888, he developed a solid wax cylinder record. During 1896-1897, Edison organized the National Phonograph Company and began mass-producing cylinder recordings of music and entertainment.

"Edison Cylinder Records, 188-1912," by Allen Koenigsburg. (This work lists only the brown wax and 2-minute black wax cylinders.) The value of a cylinder depends on the condition, rarity, and demand. I would guess that the average cylinder is worth between $4.00 and $10.00, while some others are worth considerably more.

Catalog for Edison cylinder records, September 1911. A process for mass-producing duplicate wax cylinders was put into effect in 1901. The cylinders were molded, rather than engraved by a stylus, and a harder wax was used. The process was referred to as Gold Moulded, because of a gold vapor given off by gold electrodes used in the process.
